M22 question

I thought that you could only get the M22 in a solid lifter car. But at a cruise night last nigtht I was talking to a guy that has a 1970 Chevelle SS454 LS5 M22 convertible that is fully documented. The price listed on the order sheet was for "4 spd close ratio" and was "184.80" I think. That sounds like the owner ordered an M21 but the build sheet shows the M22 clearly. This was an unrestored car as well.

On the Contrary,thats what you recieved when you ordered a 1970 Chevelle SS 454,and asked for a 4 spd Manual trans.,..the M-22.
Be it LS5,or LS6,It had nothing to do with solid lifters.
I know of over 40 LS5's that were built with the M22.
What would be more surprising is an LS5 built with an M21.I have yet to see any paper or physical proof they did,including that Convert.on TC that said it did.It's buildsheet was altered.

So the M22 solid lifter thing was a Camaro or Nova issue, not Chevelle or full size I guess. The price listed for the M22 seemed like a bargain then at $184. I thought the M22 option for Camaros was over $300.

My understanding was because the 454 was new for 1970, the M22 was mandatory due to warranty concerns. Since the 454 was not available in the Nova/Camaro, that is likely the reason for the M21 in those cars, excluding the solid lifter cars. JMO

LOL! I forget already. It was a cruise night at the local Hooters and there was a lot to look at so I don't remember all the details. I think I do remember the order form listing blue with white interior.

The M22 was not available on any engine for the 70 Nova including the BB's.

I agree that the M-22 was the standard four speed behind the '70 454 Chevelles, also as I recall the 454 M-22 was different than the M-22's in the 70 Camaros. The 454 cars got the larger output shaft and the fine spline input shaft, whereas the Camaro M-22's were still the coarse spline. These changes became standard on all the M-22 equipped cars beginning in '71.
