Default Muncie Question

In my 69 Z/28 I have an M-22 dated P9M28. My car is an X-33 06A and through process of number calculations was built close to June 19th. My question is, there is no C code on this trans, no Vin, and its shows the wrong month, would this be a replacement? should have a Counter exchange number correct? or could have the original owner just gone to chevy parts and buy one and put it in and thats why it doesnt have the c-code? was this code only used for new builds and not over the counter buys?
Sam

How do you know it is an M22! Maybe the original case broke and the owner had to buy one from GM years ago. I never saw any particular numbers on a warranty or counter sold trans, but of course I haden't seen them all. Sam

Sam, Muncie's didn't start the A-B-C ratio coding until end of Oct. or begining of Nov. of 1968 calender year. Your trans was built Aug. 28 1968 for use in a 1969 model year car. I have an N.O.S. M-21 built P9M24 without an A-B-C code. 1967 and older transmission sold over the counter had just a P# build date, some time in 1968 over the counter transmissions got the CT8 and a 5 digit number with the P#. So yours might be early enough and didn't get the CT8 code...Hope this helps...Crash

Crash, His car is an X33 06A, so this trans won't be original to his car if the trans was a late August build. Maybe a warranty job laying on the shelves? Sam

Is it possible it is original, or just way to old? could it sit on a shelf for 9 months. Was there a cetain date they built the M-22's and stock piled them since they were not put in many cars? I have another 06a and it has a m-21 dated in may..this one has me stumped....

Sam, I am no expert. I think it is a little old. You should ask Jerry MacNeish or BKH. It is usually within 2-3 months of the build date. Should have your cars VIN on it also. I think it was an over the counter trans. from GM. Sam
