Actually, no chatter in any gear!

When it worked, the clutch was smooth as silk. I actually drove it yesterday. Intermittently, the clutch would not disengage.

There is a good reason.

Any guesses. If we don't get any correct guesses, I will start giving hints.

flywheel and pressure plate was severely gouged?
