Default Memorial Day..

Monday is Memorial Day... a day to remember, honor and show our respect to those who have served and those who continue to serve the cause of freedom.

This video about a Vietnam era hero truly speaks to all of this and more.

Notice he is using one of Mikhail Kalashnikov's rifles. The early M-16s had issues with reliablity (later versions were much better). The Kalashnikov's would operate even when full of mud!

Good stuff Wilma -- brought back some good and bad memories ... TAZ

Thanks for posting that. Please remember though, Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring the fallen, not veterans in general.

Correct -- Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans. TAZ

I agree that remembering those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom is the true meaning of Memorial Day. But, there are literally 1000's of Memorial Day parades and events held across this nation...and all will have veterans in them, or standing on the corner watching the procession.

The living veterans are a kind of connection to their fallen brothers and sisters...so for me personally, I pay tribute to them all. Lord knows we can never do it often enough!

**I played golf last Friday in an event with a gentleman named "Elmer"...he was 91 years old and a veteran of WW2...he was quite a guy!!

I am pretty certain that Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and came about to put flowers on the graves of those who died in the Civil War. I don't know when it was changed to Memorial Day to honor all those veterans who gave their lives serving our country; maybe after WWI or WWII? I consider it a day when I honor all veterans too, living and deceased.
On another note there is a WWII vet, age 90, that plays in our local senior softball league (for those age 50 and over). He is quite a guy and I admire him greatly. We were on the same team last season.
