Default Odd Airbox find

A friend of mine was out picking when he came across this, he called and said he found a dual snorkel box missing a snorkel and asked if I wanted it. So I picked it up today, I thought it looked like a 66 Chevy 427 lid but the box is strange. It's got the factory paint, no primer. The one snorkel is just a hole with no signs of ever having a snorkel attached. It's got the round (holly) base hole with 3 other holes and one in the back. Someone dented it to fit a tall distributor. The snorkel is only about an 1-3/4 long, it has no flange and the end retains black paint. It may just be a pile but it came out of a very hot pick. Boss 429 car in the basement hot, surrounded by 428 SCJ motors and rare parts from all makes, mostly ford. It's about 17" across.

Well, I'm not sure what that would be for. Interesting piece. It's not a '66 Chevy. The bottom of the body isn't flat, contour of the lid and the snorkel mounting aren't correct for '66.

Thanks Mark, it's a mystery to me, the ribs on the lower box look a little fordish the more I look at it.

I've scanned a 1/2 doz books and looked at 1000 pix and cant find anything close. From the size of it I would have to say big block.

The ribs and lid look like Pontiac. Check out a Pontiac dual snorkel from the late 60s-early 70s and you will see what I mean.

I agree Jason. The lid and the diameter of the box at nearly 17-inches say Pontiac 1969-72. But maybe an earlier air box with a later lid - that hole might fit a mid-60s Pontiac with Carter carb. Someone has seriously monkeyed with the snorkels. Non GTO - Goat lids were chrome.

i dont think its a dual snorkel...i think someone cut up a single snorkel.. it looks like that anyway to me..the round hole in the floor, looks like it is for 71 up carb with the big tower on a Q-jet...but it looks added too..somewhere in the back of my mind..i think its a 68 GTO or firebird some worked on...

It doesn't look like the finish on the lid is the same as the base. Maybe they did not go together.
