Default 1970 Chevelle questions

Please tell me if this timeline is correct:

- At the start of the 1970 model year, the SS 396 was available as an L34 and L78, plus L89 heads.
- Soon, the SS 454 package with LS5 was introduced.
- Then, perhaps in November 1969, the LS6 was added to the SS 454 package, replacing both the L78 and L89.

So, what I'm curious about, was the LS5 available concurrently with the L78/89 before the LS6 was introduced, as above? Or was the SS 454 package a complete replacement for the L78/89?

Thanks!

My 1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS5 convertible survivor was a very early car...
it has a T0806CRT assembly date/code on the motor, and 10D build date on the trim tag.

As Helmut's numbers would indicate and my understanding, the LS5 option was ready to go at the beginning of the MY for Chevelles.

True,LS-6 was a separate entity slated for the 1970 Corvette only.
When that didn't materialize,it was later installed in the Chevelle after production had already started for the LS-5 Chevelle/Elco/Monte C.

A couple of sources to consider........

http://ls6registry.com/tech/trivia.htm

http://www.chevelles.com/forums/15-t...h-factory.html

Mid year for the LS5 in Chevelles seems early to me. Also the LS5 Convertible with a 10D date is certainly the earliest I've seen reported. Owned one as well and I thought it was one of the earliest with a 12C production.......still have a copy of the original build sheet.

Thanks for the responses.

It's interesting to learn how Helmut's car is so much earlier than other ones that are listed in the Chevelles.com link.

Don't know if this matters as far as the date code, but Helmuts Survivour car is 100% stock , and is also a Carolina Blue car,..... Would it have anything to do with being a special order paint car ?.
My guess is it was just a very early order LS5 , 4 Sp Convertible

Here's a photo I have on hand. All original Carolina Blue factory paint (except stripes were added), original interior (except drivers seat), untouched original born with drivetrain (never been out of the car). 100% original.
