Law Enforcement Support Equipment

My intent is not to make this a political debate -- but after watching the California shooting yesterday ... for anyone to say the LE agencies do not require surplus military equipment such as MRAP, etc. is ridiculous. In that scenario, the cops needed ever piece of equipment they used. TAZ

Considering their evolving mission, I can't disagree. LEOs need to be able to defend themselves. Liberty and security is a very fine line though. There's a picture I saw not long ago that hit the nail on the head. It read, &quot;When did this (pic of Andy &amp; Barney Fife) turn into this? (Pic of SWAT all decked out). Answer was, &quot;When this (pic of simple cat burglar) turned into this (pic of, enter what you want here. Well financed drug gangs, foreign and domestic terrorists etc.)

America has changed dramatically since the late 1960's...we have gone from a society that placed a high value on families, good citizenship, morality, religious beliefs and hard work....to one that has rampant drug crime, moral and social decay, a declining work ethic and ever decreasing family values.

The things we see today didn't happen over nite...it has been a slow downward progression over many decades and it will require time to get things back on track. The terrorism component that now threatens us and the rest of the free world only serves to magnify our other problems. Who would have ever dreamed 50 years ago that LE would need military vehicles/equipment today just to do their jobs...scary!

I have no issue with giving them the tools they need to do the job...I just hope that folks wake up and start fixing the real problems here and abroad, before it is too late.

My condolences and prayers go out to the families of the slain and injured victims from yesterdays horrific incident. Law Enforcement Officers as a whole have been scrutinized and are under the microscope in the wake of all these police involved shootings that our wonderful news media likes to sensationalize about. I have even overheard individuals say publicly on the news that they &quot;hate&quot; the police.

The public needs to remember who is on the front lines when the $hit hits the fan domestically. It is our local law enforcement officers, the road patrol officers, who are the first responders and get directly involved in the thick of total chaos. I don't know how many times I have heard, &quot;I could never do that job&quot;. And of course like anything else, there are &quot;bad apples&quot; in the bunch but the good ones totally outweigh the bad ones!! I don't care if you work in Mayberry RFD with a department of 2 officers or a large agency like New York City PD with over 20,000 officers.

Sadly many local law enforcement agencies are under budgeted, under staffed and ill equipped. Unfortunately some in the public forget or don't know this and take our local officers for granted. The police always become the public's best friend when needed.

God Bless all of the officers involved in yesterdays incident and thank God none were killed in the line of duty. They are the REAL HEROES. Kudos to them for spotting and apprehending these dangerous suspects so quickly. The police chief of San Bernardino stated the suspects had around 1,400 rounds of .223 ammunition and over 200 rounds of 9mm. These two suspects were planning serious business and carnage with that kind of fire power.

God Bless all of our Law Enforcement Officers across this great nation and may God Bless this nation so these types of attacks STOP. The police need the public's full support.

I shared this thread with some of my non car friends and got some interesting comments that caused me to reflect. The issue of military grade resources in the hands of local law enforcement is a troubling one. Seeing a hometown cop in full SWAT team dress is disturbing to me...yet the safety of LEO's must be considered.

As I stated earlier, our society has evolved downward [unfortunately] to a point where these events are now commonplace. So how does local law enforcement prepare?? how should they be equipped?? how much firepower is enough?? all tough questions with no easy answers.

The one thing I am sure of is...if we don't turn things around and deal with these threats and the cancers in our society the end results won't be pretty.
