Default Muncie shifter handle modification

Tom Williams asked me if I would cut an original Muncie shifter handle and weld it to a Hurst shifter handle bottom for him. This way you can still have the original Muncie look from the interior but under the shifter boot you have a reliable Hurst shifter gate assembly. I used the one Tom already had done as a template. Of course I had to finish the job my way and grind the welds down and polish it. This way it’s ready for the chrome shop. Hopefully when Tom gets the shifter handle back from the chrome shop he will post a picture of the final product. Then maybe a picture of the handle installed in the L78 Nova.

Original shifter after I cut it.

I didn’t take a picture of this step but both pieces, both sides, where ground at a 45 degree angle for good weld penetration.

Ready for the chrome shop……

That handle is going in the Canadian Red L78....the Muncie handle is the last item needed to finish the interior. I did this a few years back on my black 4 spd. car...we removed the factory "Mungie", installed a Hurst Compettion Plus with the fabricated handle. Looks factory..but, doesn't shift like factory

Most of you know how bad the factory Muncie shifters were...even when they are new ...this really makes a nice package.

I'll post some "installed" photos when it gets back from the chrome shop.

Many thanks to Jason for his efforts

Nice work Jason. Tommy, why did you not just leave the CP shifter handle on and not do all that work. Would still be fine with the Hurst handle I would think. remember they are novas and can get away with anything.

Sammy, the stock Hurst handle is a little short..and doesn't really fit that well with the bench seat...you have to reach too much.

I looked at some other Hurst handles, but this is a better option functionally and cosmetically.

good thing my wheelbase is short cause the one in my 69 nova fits "me" perfect. Got an original restored shifter from Chevy Ray years ago but will probably never install it. The Hurst CP that is in the nova was installed sometime very early 69. "Only" modification the original owner ever did. Love that blue nova. They are underrated cars IMO.

Just did mine to the 72 Nova last year.Sam,when you looked inside my car at MCACN show it was the stock handle bolted to a Hurst comp.plus setup.I just took apart the assembly, did a little grinding to make it fit and drilled two holes.Much more comfortable when shifting.
