Wow! Amazing it was still available especially in Illinois since there are a lot of Yenkos here.

Dan,

That looks like some kind of specialty plate that was not available when I lived in IL. What is the "EA" at the end?

Bill,
It's something fairly new called "Expanded Antique" plates. Fewer restrictions than the normal Antique plate. With the EA version you can pretty much use it as a daily driver during the 'Car Season'.

Obviously, a little more costly than the older Antique Plates, .......... because as you recall, ..... THIS IS ILLINOIS!

"Expanded Antique" plates are $50.00 per year here in IL.

vs. $7/year ($35 for the 5 year term of the plate) for the normal antique plates if I recall.

I paid $17.00 for my Ohio Antique plates, but that was 16 years ago. It's a little higher now, but Ohio has a one time only fee for that type of plate. No renewal fee. Just one more thing not to like about Ohio.

Dan,
Does Sam's plate fall under the "Standard Expanded Antique" category, or is it considered a "Vanity" version? The SOS site is a little vague as to what constitutes "Vanity". That's where the fees go up.

Thanks for the explanation! And yes, I am getting a 'refresher' on IL as I am back here for a brief visit. First lesson in the refresher course.....driving the IL Tollway leaving the airport....get out your money and prepare to be robbed blind
