Default # Produced vs Known to Exist Today?

http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail...ign=CA0812_F123

I don't know this car, I just have a question about numbers.

This car is one of 116 built and the only one known to exist now. Obviously special purchase cars, these weren't cars that were sold to he general public by accident. If there were 116 built and the people that bought them went out of their way to order them particularly to race them the other 115 couldn't have all been wrecked beyond repair. My question is how did 100 or so of these special order hard to get cars get lost in time? I am sure many people have asked the same question about the COPO Camaros, but there were more of those built and some dealers kept an inventory of them.

I never even knew there was such a thing as a COPO L88 Corvette.

I don't think they are claiming that the other 115 are lost or destroyed. I think they are claiming that this particular L88 has some other distinguishing option or feature that sets it apart from all of the other L88's produced in 1969.
I started a thread in the Mecum Auctions section about this car and someone posted a video when the car was at another auction. If I recall correctly, someone in the video; I think it was Kevin MacKay, states that the original owner for the car specified that the car be built without the HD brakes. This may have been the COPO part that is referenced when talking about this car.
