SS STEERING WHEEL HORN SHROUD QUESTION

On the 1969 Nova, Camaro and Chevelle steering wheel center shroud area that holds the ss insignia and the horn buttons, I have seen two different colors on the striping bands that go around the shroud. I have seen chrome and silver colored..

Does anyone know the applications for each or significance???

It seems to me that there were discussions about the interior trim on certain Novas..depending on the options selected. I believe Greg Roberts has some info on this...it may have also impacted the dash bezel trim accent...I would reach out to him.

His handle is Nova Research project...very good guy, really knows his stuff.

My 69 SS Camaro survivor had the rosewood with the chrome accent and std int.

The bands were originally heat-transfer chrome foil. It dulled quickly to a silver appearance, eventually wore off. Very common to touch it up with a silver paint marker. Looks better but not OE.

I believe the chrome foil can be acquired through car model suppliers.

The Novas were indeed the chrome foil on the steering wheel centers, as were the varying levels of dash bezel trim. The varying levels has been an oft discussed topic!

I thought the pebble grain was different between Camaro/Nova and Chevelle, with the Chevelle being larger grain size.

Chevrolet used the camera vien pattern starting in 1970.
1969 had the pebble grain pattern.
It is funny how many repro company's sell a horn shroud for 1970 models using the 1969 pattern, that is so wrong to do.

Hello Rich,

Most Original Novas in 69 and 70 were silver painted horn shroud trim. I have yet to run across a true original survivor with a overlay.

The rosewood insert was an overlay (not considered standard on the Nova). Parts counter shrouds could come either way. The Nova was the cheap car and not much expense was put forth. The Camaro and Chevelle probably had the aluminumized overlay for the upper models.

At least that is the trend. Never say never with these cars. These shrouds did tend to crack and over time were replaced so it makes it difficult to tell a survivor from a early replacement.

When I was in the restoration parts business we had literally hundreds of used '69 shrouds; I always picked them in salvage yards. I never saw one with silver paint. Every NOS shroud had the chrome treatment; pebble or leather grain.

They were originally serviced by color and with or without woodgrain. The last one serviced by GMPD was black with woodgrain.
