Default Is the Z28 on the chopping block again?

Lutz sure seems to be hinting at it.

“I think the V6 Camaro is probably a very good model for the future of the high-performance car in America,” Lutz said, adding, “the Solstice coupe with the 2.0-liter turbo engine is another good expression of the future of the high-performance car, which is smaller, lighter, more fuel-efficient, and probably with lower displacement, but with a turbocharger.”

It sounds like Mr. Lutz no longer has a hold on his own vocal cords over at Government Motors.

Gee, how nice of Lutz to extoll the virtues of a CAR THEY JUST KILLED OFF: The Solstice - a Pontiac, you idiot!

I'm not sure I'm upset about there not being a Z28. Would I like to see something of similar calibur to the GT500, sure I would. I just don't see taking the CTS-V running gear and dropping it in a Camaro and calling it a Z28 to be that big of a loss. Heck, that doesn't even sound like a recipe for the Z28's that I think of, although it could be the makings of a different supercar.

Admittedly, I'm one of those guys who feels much more strongly about the cars made up to and including 1969. The early Z28's had a purpose and a uniueness about them. I feel all of the later ones were just marketing cars. Similar situation with the old GTO vs the newer ones. I don't think they needed to be called a GTO.

I have driven enough turbocharged cars to remain open minded about any smaller displacment Camaro. I'm sure the Z28 is not gonna help get GM out of the present situation, and the federal test proceedure and the associated peanalties for the gas guzzler should have GM considering some well thought-out turbo options.

Rather than an cross-ram in the trunk, wouldn't it bee neat to find a bolt-on turbo kit to double your hp?

I never really understood why GM was never that successful with turbo options after the success of the Grand National. I'm aware of the other GM turbo cars (limited produciton, outsourced and others) from the 1990's but I wouldn't call any of them a success. Maybe Lutx knows about some sort of Chevy version of the turbo Solstice is is trying to re-enforce it's strengths to the public. I trust that would be a welcomed offering to the public. Even Hundyai now offers a little turbo rwd sports car.

Anyways, which is the bigger loss to complain about. The loss of a the Z28 name or the loss of a car to compete with the GT500?

Lutz retired. The CTSV engine in a Camaro would be absolute killer. The ZR1 engine like I have in my 69 is about the same engine but with a bigger blower. Go test drive a CTSV and imagine that engine in a Camaro... Then imagine pumping it up a little thru the aftermarket. My LS9 is the best engine I have owned. Amazingly smooth usable power. In fact if the Z28 did come out with the CTSV blown engine I think a ZR1 engine would be a no brainer for a transplant.
