Re: abnormal spread between block date and body -L_78?
Very strange however my 68 camaro COPO - non converted yenko car - has trans date code of feb 68, block casting in April, assembly date punched in june and car build date in August. Who would think these cars or parts would be sitting around???

Larger spreads have been documented, if you have the right casting #'s and the vin is on the block, don't worry about it.

Re: abnormal spread between block date and body -L_78?
Consider that there will be assmebled parts for inventory and these will be pulled as needed, or sent as special orders came. GM , I am certain , would keep X amount of stock in inventory as needed! This is where the dates will move around. Consider that Baby Blue Z28 from Coloardo recently, all the orders placed but parts not in inventory, for example. Even the ZL1 cars lacked parts to meet a predetermined December timeline. But Chevrolet was really crankin' about January, 1969 so many parts could be floating about the assembly plants

Re: abnormal spread between block date and body -L_78?
I once looked at a 69 L-78 block with an October 68 cast date, and a May 69 engine assembly date. Don't remember the VIN, to estimate the car build date.

Re: abnormal spread between block date and body -L_78?
My 1970 L78 engine was built last week of November 69 and the
car was built first week of June 1970.It is the original engine. For the limited production cars you will often see a this kind of abnormal time frame.

Re: abnormal spread between block date and body -L_78?
Had a '68 435 vette that was a local, one owner car with a casting date of October 67 and a build date of July 68. It was bult in the final days of '68 production and was the original engine. Why a nine month spread? Who knows, but the original local owner sure didn't know anything about restamping an engine in the late 80's when I bought this car. The engine could have been damaged while being put together and sat for weeks and weeks before being repaired.

Re: abnormal spread between block date and body -L_78?
In the old days there was no "just-in-time" delivery. There was a lot of stock stored in the plant. Racks of engines could sit back against the back wall for a long time if the stock wasn't being rotated properly.
