1969 RPO DX1 Hood Stripes

I have always wanted to know what the story was behind the seldom seen RPO DX1 Stripe option. The following 1969 RS Camaro on ebay add has these original stripes, but missing on hood due to replacement.

I aways wandered why this stripe option never took off. I know y'all in the know will educate me.
