Default Painting Chrome Bumpers

Has anyone had luck painting chrome bumpers? What were the procedures/materials used?

Thanks -- The TAZ

I did years ago on one of my race cars. We sandblasted the chrome off, and then acted like any other bare metal.

Dave thanks -- That is what I have read ... the only CAUTION is not to inhale any of the dust as it will raise hell with your lungs. I have also read that sanding with 180 DA worked ...

And to comment again -- good looking "Dr Olds" machine. When I had my 69' W-30 I had the opportunity to talk with the Smothers Brothers about their racing adventures ... those were cool times.

Just curious why you are painting them?? Depending on the car many repo chrome bumpers are cheaper than the paint supplies today plus your time and labor.

I have to buy paint for the rest of the car anyway, so that really doesn't make any difference ... my time and labor are free and have seen a few Novas with painted bumpers that match the color of the car. At this point I am just kicking it around -- hell, tomorrow I may change my mind and get repops. With that being said -- have you any suggestions for a 71' Nova bumper vendors?

Thanks -- The TAZ ...

Painted bumpers are not a bad way to go, especially when repops are junk or non available.

Here is a 66 Fairlane I did recently that had the bumpers rechromed 6-10 years prior. They were peeling and rusting already and the $1000 plus to rechrome to bumpers was not in the budget. 5 hours labor and gun metal grey was the new scheme.
