Default 68 camaro survivor w/ 6 cyl (13 sec)

Hey, when is the last time you ran across a 6 cylinder camaro running this fast? I ran across a guy that has one that made the high 13s back in the day (local chicago area slips and trophies for winning its class). no options except the floor stick and the nose stripe. It just seems hard to believe. Original motor but he changed the cam I think. Just sitting in the garage.....

Probably a little more than a cam change I bet unless it was an 1/8th mile time slip.

Anyone have a Car and Driver example of what a 6 cyl did back then? It may have run the number, but wasn't just a cam change.

If this guy has a bone stock survivor, but did bore out the original engine, maybe change cam, and ran a header, is it worth much compared to a car with no history in drag racing? I can't judge how much the drag racing history adds to the car (being a 6 cyl). I think he ran 'special' gas in it. I feel like it is a unique car, for what it has accomplished (if true, it reached 13.85 once in the 1/4).

I don't see the car's alleged drag racing history and/or engine mods adding anything to the value. And IF it's true, you can bet the farm he had to do a whole lot more than bore it, change cam, add a header, and run racing gas in it to run in the 13's

bill, thanks for the info on value add. I kinda thought it would not add that much, just thought it was cool.

I met with him last night, he ran it at US30 4 times, best time was 13.89 at 101 in the 1/4. 361 rear gears (stock). All he changed was the jets (21 to 10?). He ran A stock. He ran once over at oswego (did bad as they did not have the same class). I am not sure anyone had records still for US30 for april-may 1971. His car is registered for those race times and he had to sign some waver for his drive shaft not being strapped. Very cool these things could run that fast back in the day, I believe him, the car is so light (I am digging it, maybe I will end up with it, being an oddball car that really looks good in such zero option plain jane form).
I thought he told me years back it was bored out some and he ran a header, he said nope, just changed the jets and added racemasters in back. Had a tach added so he could shift at 5K, and just got it into third for a brief time. He said most people thought he ran on in just 2 gears, he said nope, he hit third at the end, barely.

I just don't see the story being true.

Don't think you could get a 3.61 gear in any Camaro from the factory in 1969.

That little 140 hp 6 wiht a 1 bbl carb shouldn't gain that much hp to run 13.89 with just a jet change.

A quick calculator reveals a 3000lb car with would need to be putting about 230hp AT THE WHEELS to run 13.89 @ 101 mph.

Only jet change I could see bringin your a minimum of 100hp are Nitrous jets. Don't think the original 140hp ratin was at the wheels either.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I find it interesting you beleive this story could have happended.

The L22 version was a mighty 155 hp (250 cu in).
I'm hard pressed to believe this, esp when a Z had to be tweaked a bit to get there....
Still, interesting car.

I agree. To run mid 13's you have to have at least 350+ HP in that weight of a car. No stock 6 cylinder 68 250ci has that. That would be more than 1 HP per cubic inch

Plus, the guy that I bought my 12 bolt for my first car (Nova) was BIG into 6 cylinder Camaros, and "hopping then up" as he said. He did have a 67 that ran 13.15's, but it had a Clifford Research head, special intake manifold, different crank, different pistons, different cam...and lastly a decent size (780 cfm?) Holley on it. It had a 12 bolt 3:73 posi as well (I ended up with the 12 bolt )

Torque is the other thing that pushes a car down the road. You guys have light years more experience than I do, but you do have to factor in the torque numbers to be fair, when judging an engine. Then there is the weight difference between a small block chevy and this 6 that works back into the equation. It the larger 6 option motor (not the 230). So I know the stock rating was 155hp not 140. Maybe this car weighs in under 3000 lbs.

time will tell if this is all bs (as it is fasinating). Car still sits as it did in 1971. It was not mid 13s, to be exact, it was 13.89 as best time, one time. Car must have ran 14 on the other times. He has a big trophy from US30 and I have to help him go through tons of paper to find the time slips for it.
