VIN Issue - Hidden and Title Mismatch

Once again another car has a title and vin that does not match the hidden vins. Being a project car when I purchased it the vin tag and trim tag were off the car due to excessive rust repair around the tags. The person I bought the car from had to get a duplicate title for the car so I did not get it when the car was delivered to me. I blame myself 100% for not verifying all the vins and title prior to purchase.

What are the options available today short of sending the car back to the seller? I have done significant work to the car since I got it and really want to complete it.

I am trying to locate someone to run the hidden vin to check the status of it and see if it is reported stolen or if there is another car registered with this vin.

I would really like to try and resolve this issue the correct way if it is at all possible. What are my options?
