That is in fact the last three numbers of the job sequence number that is found in box 1 of the buildsheet. These are commonly found on Baltimore Chevelles and more rarely on some other plant cars. I find these on the bottom of the hood, hood latch, snorkel tube, door jamb, top of the heater box and top of the fuel tank to name a few.

The first 2 photos are of Oliver Pask's white LS6 I am currently restoring.

The one labeled 504 is of Harry Snow's 8000 mile survivor Baltimore L34. I have several more examples in my data base.
