My guess would be the assembly line build sequence number.

Typically the last two or three digits of the full sequence number are written on components that are built up on subassembly lines and then conveyed in sequence to the main line (front end sheetmetal, rear axle, tire/wheel assemblies, seats, etc).

My Flint built pickup was "number 87" (full sequence number was probably around 133887).
