The z28 option was a 400 some odd dollar engine option. When you selected this several more options, like power front disc barkes, 4 speed transmission, 12 bolt axle, HD suspension, etc. was added to the base 12437 coupe price tag. You paid for each of the mandatory options separate from the Z28 option. That 400 dollars only got you the 302 engine. Then you could add other options, like the center console, U17 gauges, spoiler ZL2 hood, posi, etc to the car, again paying for each item.
It was the same way with an SS. Selecting the Z27 SS option got you an L48 engine, from there you could pay a little more for an L35, L34, L78 or L89 (OK alot more for the last 2)
