I owned an original SS 396 1967 convertible, and found all research I read indicated the RS option trim on a 396 car would be superceded by the SS option. But you never know, the trim holes line up, and they could have been missed on the assembly line, or changed later. The steering wheel cap is easily removed. The SS car also had a different gas cap, made from aluminum, with the SS(396) or SS350 designation.
There were a bit over 5000 396 cars built in 1967, and many of them were SS/RS cars, the RS trim was just not needed, because the option was so obvious-hide away headlights, lower valance turn signals, lower valance back-up lights.
Many people have been mistaken that the "SS" option included the hide-aways, but this is not true. Probably because the "RS" trim was not on the combination SS/RS cars.
