Chuck...Ive seen several of these blocks over the years and the majority of these all seemed to have experienced some sort of fatigue thus resulting in neccessary repairs. I believe back then that most people who got there hands on one of these ran them! For those that have lasted without damage, I think were not used as often. I for one am in the thought that if you personally choose to run one of these and can have it fixed , go for it! It's not always the cheapest form of Nostalgia but if the ZL1 is the desired appearance, I suppose the costs will reflect the owners desire to run it! Ive had 2; one that cracked around the lifter galleys(prior owner to me) and another that thru a rod. I agree with you though, the costs to repair these are significant!
