I would suggest spraying the gold flake over a similar looking gold metallic base. It will take a lot less flake to get the achieved result, and with less flake means less clear needed to bury it.
If you want a flat glossy appearance in the end, be prepared to clear the flake job, sand it again, then re-clear it. Depending on how rough your flake looks, and how heavy you apply the clear, you may need to put a third coat of clear on.
