[SS427]

I just inspected this 136370B162106 car over a 2 day period last week and wanted to update this almost 5 year old thread since searching the VIN on Google will only bring this thread up and this car deserves clarification as it is a very nice survivor.
I spent over 8 hours inspecting every square inch of the car and most importantly, the engine stamp. What I determined was the car is a real LS6 based on the paperwork alone. However, the CRW stamped rear differential has mysteriously vanished (since the video) though even that was odd as it had the very well documented ground and restamped CRW 0223 stamping but instead of the 3969278 casting differential, it had the late 69 version of the 3959038 casting. The original M22 is also gone and a replacement 1971 M22 is now in it’s place. More importantly though, the engine that is currently in the car is in fact the original engine to the car. Yes it is stamped 0402 in an 03B car but based on the photos I looked at of the engine block laying next to the car when it was originally pulled out to put the race engine in and looking at the engine stamp and broach marks as they are today, I have no doubt that it is the original engine to the car and the stamp was a factory fubar. Seeing the block in person it looks way better than the photos you have all seen which I would agree, look iffy.
That alone may not have been enough to qualify this car to some people so I spent the better part of the weekend going through my database and then finally made a phone call to see if I could find another car with the same date and I did. That car was an Arlington car and was built on 03D. In addition, that car has been/is owned by two close friends of mine and members here, Chad Blomberg and Chris White. When Chad bought the car, it was a totally unmolested survivor that never had anything done to it and was a well aged and dirty car. Chris now owns this car and confirmed to me yesterday that his engine is in fact the original and was a factory mis-stamp, likely meant to be an 0204 dated block instead of 0402. The stamps got transposed when installed into the gang stamp.
This is why it is so important to not only do your homework when trying to qualify a car but keep this information in a database for the future in case this comes up again. The same thing happened last month when I had an 109B198xxx LS6 in my shop. I was having a hard time making myself believe that this car would have a 1969 engine stamp on a June car and possibly a restamp and asked the question here on sYc and low and behold, that same friend reminded me of a convertible with a similar stamp. I looked up that car and it was not only produced on the same day at the same plant but the casting date was exactly the same.
Many people question the cost of an inspection, depending on who is doing it, you get exactly what you are paying for.
