Ford's 406/406 HP engine was developed from their HiPo 390 in response to Chevy's 409, Pontiac's 421 and Chrysler's 413 for use in NASCAR. The 406 had a very short lifespan. Ford started the 1962 model year with the 390 while all the other manufacturers had engines greater than 400 CI. From this was born the 406. Ford was the only manufacturer to use Tri-Power for it's top engine. The others used dual quads instead. It was replaced by the potent Ford Dual Quad 427 midway through the 1963 model year.
