The 150 pound difference between the 327 and the 396 can account for that.
By 1967/1968 buyers of high performance cars wanted big block engines, hoods with scoops or bulges, stripes, redline tires and most of all . . . a catchy name. R/T, GTX, SS, GT Road Runner, 442 etc. The market for "Q-Ship" muscle cars was very limited.
