In some places, the undercoating was over an inch thick.
The next two are photos of the bottom side after I cleaned it. It pretty much involved a propane torch, a couple of scrapers, a lot of Purple stuff and then some 3M grease remover (that stuff works great, but if you use it, make sure you have adequate ventilation!).
Here's the "after" with the update subframe installed. I painted the bottom side in low gloss black. I think it came out nicely.
