I've never shipped a trans, but the last time I shipped cylinder heads, I built two home-made wooden crates that will hold either a SB or BB head. Either head will bolt to the bottom of the box so they can't shift inside, and both crates have oval hand holes on either side. Overkill?...maybe, but they work.

Another option is to check with your local engine/speed shop and see if they have any empty aftermarket cylinder head boxes laying around. Those boxes are extremely sturdy and will protect a head very well.
