Rather than responding seperately in two posts I have combined these:

I agree. However the "survivor" paint has to be nice enough to be "respectable" at the Saturday night parking lot show. Otherwise the owner soon tires of hearing "why don't you paint it." No point in paying "extra" for a survivor that you will end up painting soon after you buy it.

Right on.
So many people get the idea that because of the low bid prices of unsold/reserve not met cars on the highly viseable Ebay, that these car are only worth the high bid. Many people simply use Ebay as a marketing tool and don't really expect that it will sell there. You can't blame potential buyers for trying to steal something in a down turn market. OTOH, unless you HAVE to sell there are no deal to be had. Most people that have rare desirable cars will hold them unless they get what they want for them. It still all boils down to supply and demand. If you WANT a certain car you either pay the price or see if you can build a clone to satisfy your need. Most are finding that in todays market they are better off buying a REAL car. The clone is only worth at best the sum total of its parts and in this market could not sell the done clone car for what they have in it, sometimes 1/2 of that.
