512 long block question
 
Back in the day when you could buy a L-88 over the counter from your local chevy dealer. Is it correct that there are no numbers on the deck pad area?

I believe that crate engines came with the CEXXXXXX numbers stamped on them so that they could be traced for warranty purposes.

The 67 L88 I had a while back was stamped with an assembly date and the "IT" suffix.
I believe the 69 over the counter L88's were done that way also, if they were a whole engine.

Thanks ...........Very Interesting I thought there should be something there atleast. Well I assume it must have been Decked then Sometime In It's life. Well Here's the Deal I came Across A 512 Long block complete with 842 heads. It's been sitting for over thirty years. I removed the spark plugs and it turned over with out a problem. I removed the oil pan and it looked good you can still see the paint marks on the dimple rods It has had rods replaced because I see the oil pan has been welded on the inside. And the heat mark on the crank journal. The Rods look new to me. I assume it was repaired and run again then stored. I was told the engine was in a 57 chevy running a crower Mechanical fuel Injection Set up. The Manifold and line's come with the Engine The only thing missing is the Fuel pump. It has a clutch on it.(borg and Beck style) Also a old ANSEN Scattershield. With NHRA certified Cast in it. Top it all off M/T valve covers. What do you think It's worth I feel It is a L-88. -----I could be wrong but I believe a fitted block and possibly a complete shortblock was available and would have had no stamp on the pad. Check the deck to see if it has broach marks or circular machine marks which would denote that the block has indeed been decked.........Bill S

Thanks Olredalert I was told by someone else the same thing. That is the whole reason why I posted the Question. I do not see Broach marks. I think I will remove the heads and look at the deck Better. Look at Rixls6 photo he posted. I would say if the pattern is straight like his that yes it's never been decked. I will take some pictures of the engine and send them to Bruce to post. I was told the guy who had the engine Bought it new in 69 over counter. This had to be one of the Baddest things available over the counter. Ed
