442 intake gasket

I have a buddy with a 1971 442, it is currently leaking oil from the rear of the intake so next week we are going to put on a new "turkey tray" and get rid of the small rubber end gaskets in lieu of some permatex. My question is how does this turkey tray install? Do I use some type of sealant between it and the head surface or just get the surface really clean, lay down the tray then put permatex on the ends? I have never installed one of these before, but I am guessing they are better than fel pro's as they might keep some of the hot oil off of the bottom of the intake???

The "turkey tray" just lays in place and is located on two bosses in the castings. For sure coat both sides of the water ports at the corners. Probably good idea to coat the exhaust ports as well.

Use "the Right Stuff" to seal the end rails. Make sure you use enough, or you'll have the same leaks you started with. Check the end gap before you install to gage the thickness needed.

I prefer the Felpro 2 piece composite gaskets with the Right Stuff on the front and rear. Mondello sells a "tray" that bolts into the valley to shield the hot oil from the intake.

The metal one piece gaskets work, but can be a real pain to install. For sure have a helper.

Or if you want to get happy with some tin snips, you can cut up your old turkey tray instead of paying Mondello for a piece of bent up metal! Personally, I am still using the turkey tray with the permetex on the ends.
