409 turbo torque

i have ask this question on other boards but still have not found the answer. why was the 409 engine labeled as a turbo fire(1962-1965)? in the 1962 shop manual it is listed as 409 turbo torque and super turbo torque (380/409 horsepower accordingly). all other turbo fire applications are for carburated small blocks. also was the Z11 427 also a turbo fire?https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif396/425blr

Re: 409 turbo torque

I really don't have a good answer for you. The original sales literature lists the engine as a Turbo Fire, and so do the original valve cover decals. I can't explain why the shop manuals refer to it as a Turbo Torque. Perhaps that name came from marine applications?
As for the Z-11, I've never seen that RPO listed in any printed Chevy available options lists. So, I don't know what name it went by. And the original Z-11s did not come with any valve cover decals.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
