69 SS question !
 

--------A question for the pundits, experts, etc. A neighbor has an extremely nice 396/350 Atlanta built SS Chevelle. While getting an appraisal today from local all makes appraiser he announced after looking at the stamping pad that since the serial number was missing the engine cant be original. Im not a 69 Chevelle expert but asked if the serial number might be down by the oil-filter. He immediatly expounded that only 1969 Camaros built in Ohio would be stamped in that location. After he left my neighbor was bummed but I said "drag out the floor-jack" and sure enough there were the numbers on the side of the block.

I want to say it was for all Chevy models after a certain time for the 69 Model year. I know theres more info in Chevy by the Numbers and Ill double check what it says when I get home but for now heres how CRG lays it out and like I said, I would think it would be the same no matter the model.

A very good good example why some appraisals are not worth the paper they are written on.
That apprasier is mis-informned.Chevelles too recieved engines that had the CON VIN stamped by the oil filter instead of the Machined Pad behind the alternator.
In fact,having it down there is even more credible,as it is a rougher cast finish,and NEARLY impossible to replicate.
Not like the clean grained machined pad behind the Alternator.

My well documented '69 Kansas built Chevelle SS 396/325 has its original motor in it (134K miles). The Stamp Pad has the Tonawanda stamp only with excellent broaching. Its partial VIN is stamped by the oil filter. The motor was assembled on 3/4/69 with a car build date of 2nd week of March.

Yep, Bill, mine is a 21,000 mile original KC built car and the stamp is by the oil filter. I spend a lot of time on Team Chevelle and I can guarantee you that it is very common for the stamp to be down by the oil filter on 69 Chevelles.
