Kansas City Vin block stamping
 

Does anyone know why this plant stamped their big block vin numbers backwards? Was it because of a production necessity or ? See NCOA article included. Sorry I could not post it so I am going to type it.NCOA article July 27/1992 page 27 Tytle Correct Numbers

" I enjoyed your article on Block Busters written by Nick Brunt in Dec /91 Chevelle report,However I disagree with Nick.He says the enjine stamping T0106JE pictured on page 9 the bottom stamp is incorect.It is not.The I and J are definetly phony and not origional GM.
Also an intersting point about enjine stampings from the Kansas Cyti plant. They apparently had their own unique set of stamps and struck the (vin numbers only) upside down.

I have also found 3 Candian documented cars with build sheets with the same upside down vin numbers one L78, one ls5, and one 350 HP 396 70 chevelles.

I'M FINISHING UP A 70 SS 396/350 CHEVELLE SS THAT IS A KANSAS BUILT CAR WITH THE VIN # STAMPED BACKWARDS. I'LL TRY TO POST PICS.... KP

thats great, more vin numbers that confirm the special stamping.I had a friend email me the story that when he perchased a documented ls5 car from the KP plant that had his mechanic took a look at the car and called him a few hours later and told him that he had been taken because the vin number was stamped backwards, he subsequently found out throught a lot of research that the motor stampings are origional.But Why? maybe we will be lucky and a retired production worker from that plant will tellus why.? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

What do you mean by backwards? Is the row of numbers in reverse order? Maybe it was just a production worker that didn't know how to load the gang punch...

that is what I was thinking or he was left handed and rotated it by accident before the strike and didnt care that it was upside down....

I thought of that too and there are too many cars
that can be ceritified that are stamped that way
in my previous post the 1992 article also pointed to the same practice, its not only one motor it apears that all were stamped that way. The stampings can be read looking from the drivers seat position from left to right.I am talking about origional documented build sheet cars not restamps as some L78 I have seen

I had an LS-6 coupe built at Leeds that was stamped backwards as well.

I have had at least two LS6 Leeds plant cars and both were stamped upside down.
