stock appearing big block chevy fuel pump
 

i am wondering which is the best stock mechanical fuel pump for the chevrolet big block? I'm assuming it would be for the ZL-1 or L-88 engines. whats the fastest ET and mph that anyone has run with the stock fuel system(3/8" line and pump). is there a difference in pumps for low and high performance big block engines? does anyone have a picture and info on pump #6415748? thanx mike

Hey Mike,
On my 69 z28 I am running a Holly vf mechanical. It does not look stock if someone looks at it closely but unless someone is picking you apart , at a show or otherwise, you should be satisfied with it's performance and appearance. I think it's rated at 130 gp. The " Holly " label can be easily removed. The stock gm small block pump could not keep up on the dyno. The Holly hv pump did handle a 480 hp 302 as well as the electric that the dyno operator had.
As far as big block mechanical is concerned I am looking for a good factory replacement also. I figured we would try a Holly hv mechanical also. My 69 big block car has 1/2 " from the tank forward. Clearance at the crossmember is the problem. ( A Carter hv will not clear ).

Just in case anyone was interested but didn't follow the link...

We're still running the AC pump on Camaro, and when I did an A-B-A test between it and the Carter I noticed no change in performance. This particular L72 is in the 480hp range, and will easily see the sunny side of 6500 if you choose to do so, with a 3800 pound race weight...

I don't know if you have noticed, but there are now repro "L78 - LS6 - "COPO 427" fuel pumps being offered on eBay, DELCO part number 40727. I don't know the seller, and I don't know anything about the pumps..just an fyi.

In saw those earlier,.Thats Jeff D. selling those on Ebay.I had heard they were going to remanufacture these,and I guess they have.

Just throwing some info in the pot---#6415748-fuel pump the bottom can be rotated to gain clearance at inlet/outlet--it also uses the stock plunger shaft--,but as Rob stated,the AC BB GM PUMP should handle your needs, he seems to be running fine as is COPO PETE---as your engine really starts to crave fuel you would put an electric fuel pump at the tank to keep the line pressurized,but you fellas are working under guidelines----Could'nt find a photo of that #6415278-------------
