octane boost

Bought a 440 6-pk RR with a fresh engine rebuild.Has 10.5:1 compression with stock carbs and cam. Do you think octane booster is necessary to supplement premium pump gas? Seems to run OK for now.

Re: octane boost

Sure it is. It allows you to increase timing a little and to have some type of lead additive to help keep things cooler. I use the stuff from Jack Podell. Can give you 103 octane if you want it to. Sam https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Did you happen to cc the heads/pistons, etc? You can actually over do it with octane...it's better to have too much as not enough, but too much octane and not enough squeeze can hurt performance, as it did with one of our L-72s. I used all factory stock pieces, cc'ed everything, and it came in at 10.2:1 on an 11:1 advertised rating. I had to be careful of the amount of race fuel I mixed with the premium, or the results would show up in the time slips. It's more noticable in cooler air, but it's still there in the warm air as well.

Re: octane boost

With the 10.2:1 I think I was mixing it 3:1 or thereabouts...with our current 12.2:1 it gets straight race fuel. We could probably mix it a tad now, though, as we only have 34 degrees total timing in it, but I'm erring on the safe side.

We usually have a drum of purple around, though, so I'd use that versus the actual additive out of a can...the stuff in the can turned the plugs colors, making them tough to read.

You are running pretty fast on those street tires Rob! Most of those cars didn't run that much better with headers and slicks and traction bars, in my day! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Thanks Sam! Just doing my best!! The scary part is that I think there's actually a couple tenths or so still left in the car, but I think dad is probably getting tired of me messing with his car!

Hopefully some time this summer I'll start my learning curve all over when I start on my Chevelle...https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif
