1966 3 speed Schwinn Stingray

I pulled this bike out of my line up of Unrestored Survivor Stingrays for a cruise around the neighborhood.

This LB (Nov. 66) J39-3 Radiant Coppertone Deluxe Stingray is one of the earliest versions of the NEW 3 speed “Stik-Shift” model offered from Schwinn.

Original factory paint, tufted silver glow saddle and first year matching copper glitter hand grips.

This bike is essentially an early ‘67 as it has a smooth shifter handle, dated Jan. 67 rear hub and 67 style pull back handlebars.

A few scratches from a wrench used on the seat post clamp and worn paint at the wingtip of the guard from the shifter cable adjustment barrel. This is very common on these 3 speed bikes.

The Original seat is perfect with no holes, splits or stains and still very soft.

This model originally came with a WW knobby rear tire, but a previous owner installed a WW SLIK which is much cooler.

Expensive when new ($75.95) and very expensive today, as these bikes were built to last. Heavy frames, high quality hardware, thick chrome and beautiful paint.

That brings back great memories, what a beautiful bike.

Had the same bike in blue. I remember going to the Schwinn shop with my dad to pick it out. The smell of the bike shop is still seared in my mind. Put a big sissy bar on it to make it really cool!

Had the same bike around the same time frame. Same color, seat, white wall tires with rear knobby, but without the 3-speed and brake handles. Wish i kept that bike.

I had an early '67 with the same 3-speed stick but I'm not remembering the 3 on the knob. My bike was blue with a smooth white banana seat with silver metal flake in it. The grips were blue and it had a black wall cheater slick. I got good grades on my report card so that was my reward. I also had a wood "Super Surfer" skateboard that I got at Montgomery Ward the year before. Wish I still had both.

Geeeez, you youngsters and your fancy toys...

By '66-67, I was riding motorcycles and getting my permit. No bicycles for me anymore..:cool2:

Is there a way to get the paint code from that bike ? I'd love to paint my '38 that color.

I got some kind of red/white/blue bike on my 5th birthday in 1973 and proceeded to strip it down to nothing with a single seat.Nice bike.
