Very sad to hear this,I really thought he was going to kick it.
I can't see anyone today who could replace him. |
He had an amazing life...Wow.
|
Alex went to college and worked in my home town,Ottawa,Canada. My parents divorced when I was around 10.In 1962 my mother dated Alex for a short time. And I tagged along once for dinner. It was a short relationship.Think I only saw him 3 or 4 times. He worked in Canada for a while on some game shows then moved to the U.S.R.I.P. Alex you were a gentleman.

Rest in Peace, Alex. A true class act. He was held in high esteem by many people; I learned of his passing during halftime of the NFL game I was watching. Even the sports world recognized him.
|
World class individual - rare case where social status and celebrity did not interfere with family life or personal life. I watch Jeopardy! regularly and while it was rare that I got questions right, I always enjoyed watching and listing to Alex. RIP.

Alex was also a philanthropist. He donated millions of dollars to his alma mater the University of Ottawa and a building there is named after him.He was back home last October for a football game between the Ottawa U.Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens. He walked in wearing an early '60's U.of O. sweater and jeans .No entourage just Alex walking around shaking hands with people. He was given the key to the city a few years ago and quipped to the mayor about his speech "I'm going to take it back to California you make me sound important".Very self deprecating and humble man.
