Pontiac G8 GT, disabling DOD (disable on demand)

My son is contemplating a G8 GT for his wife. Three kids, so she needs a four door sedan, but wants some performance pop.

Found a car that fits all their criteria, but it has been modified a bit.

Most mods are just bolt ons; but recently the owner had the cam swapped for a DOD replacement cam. Supposedtly the ECU was reflashed to remove the DOD feature as well as the active fuel management (which I believe simply works in tandem with disabling those four cylinders.

Anyone have any experience with this upgrade? My understanding is that you must plug some oil passages when you do this upgrade. Any chances it will cause issues?

That is a fairly common " repair " to that system recently. I have been fixing VVT/AFM GM trucks recently, way too many. I would ask the seller to see all the parts receipts and the PCM reprogram shops phone number. I would stay clear of it unless it is a good deal.. The lifter roller fails and the body falls onto the cam and scores it.. Chrysler Hemi trucks , that's another bad one now also..

Thanks Scott.

I have asked for a pic of the receipt for the kit that was used.

I believe all GM parts including the LS3 camshaft.

I will probably PM you after I get that info.

Thanks again; just one more example of how great this site is.

If he likes the G8 GT have him look at a 2015+ Chevrolet SS Sports Sedan. A modernized Chevy version of the G8. Great cars that have held their value well so far. The SS will be more $ than the G8 - but much more car too. Good luck.

Thanks for the help guys.

He is on a tight budget. I raised my kids right. You don't buy a car if you can't write a check for it.

This is the kit the seller bought for the car; then took it to a shop to do the work:

So, at least I know it is a GM camshaft and lifters. Timing chain was also replaced, which has to be a good thing.

I did the DOD delete on my G8. Along with other mods.
The only thing I did over and above the kit you have listed is I blocked the oil feed holes under the galley plate and removed the hicap oil pump for a stock LS3 pump.
Dont need the HP robbing pump without the DOD.
Oh, and I plugged the oil relief hole in the oil pan to prevent the relief valve from opening (and it will) and flooding the back side of the pistons. There is a service bulletin on this valve failure.

Thanks for that input. I did some reading and saw that the oil feed holes you refer to needed to be plugged, and the oil pump changed. I do not believe the car we are looking at had the oil pump changed out. I don't know if the holes were plugged.

All good to know.

Once again, this site comes through.
