1968 Mustang GT
 

First let me say I'm not a Ford guy. I've always had Camaros. With that said I have a chance to buy a 1968 GT Mustang Fastback. I know nothing about these cars and was hopping for a little insight. Don't have any pic's right now but the sheet metal seems to be in good shape (needs a paint job) Doesn't have the original motor. I believe the trans and rear end are original. It has custom interior that's in great condition. Console and he said the steering wheel slides out of the way when you get out of the car. Never heard of that. Is there a way to tell if its an original 350 GT? (Some info stamped on a trim plate on the car). Also what would a ball park figure be for this car. (I know it's not a lot of info to go on). I plan on going over tomorrow to look at it. Would like a little help before I go. Thanks for anything you can set me straight on.

Rick -- I know the T-Birds used to have a steering wheel/column that would move toward the right ... made it easier to get into and out of. The Ford guys will need to say if a Mustang had the same option ... TAZ

Something here isn't making sense. No consoles or swing away steering wheels in 65 (sounds like a 68?). Should be a Shelby tag and VIN (ala "5S234") on the driver's fender apron over the Ford VIN (which should have a K as the fifth digit -SAAC can verify if original Ford VIN is correct). 65 trans is an aluminum T10 and rear is a 3.89 Detroit Locker 9". If it's one of the 562 made, real car with good numbers and right trans and rear, it should be well into six figures, probably with a 2 in front. Good ones are selling for $300-400k pretty regularly these days.

Tom, You were right. The car is a 68 (I edited my post and made the correction) Sorry for the confusion. I got my years all crossed up. So let me ask this. With this car being a 68 is it worth $20,000?

A good 68 fastback, esp a GT should be worth $20k, but maybe not. More info would go a long way. 5th digit in VIN tells you which engine it had new-if its an R (428CJ) your decision gets easier....

Just about and good bodied 68 fastback should be worth the 20k.

The last year for the K code 289 HiPo was 1967

The option he is referring to is called the Tilt/Tilt-Away Steering Wheel which was available in 1968.

I'd like to thank everyone for the information. That's what I love about this site. It doesn't matter what car you want info on. Someone will always chime in with help. You guys are the best. With that said I went to look at the car and the guy sold it out from underneath me. He told me yesterday he'd wait but no such luck. But thanks again and I look forward learning more from you all.
