Hood/trunk crap

After stripping the hood and trunk lid, there is some sort of “debris” (for lack of a better word) that has come loose under the reinforcement structure. First – what is this crap? Two – what can be down to remove or immobilize it? The rattle and noise made when opening or closing the hood/trunk is annoying. TAZ

Are you talking about the hardened Mastic sealant?

Re: Hood/trunk crap

I guess -- it just appears to be dark colored clobs of crap that has come loose from between the two structures ...

Re: Hood/trunk crap

Has anyone an idea how to get the loose crap out short of cutting a hole in the sub-structure??

Re: Hood/trunk crap

FWIW It actually is a kind of adhesive/sealant. It helps support, and insulate the outer skin from the inner structure. In a lot of cases, without it, you have issues with the piece being straight/flat.

OK Ken -- so tomorrow I'll get in the shop and dig up some Thermite or Tritonal and get the crap out. So what do I replace it with to provide support for the outer skin? Thanks -- TAZ

3M makes a special product just for that use. It comes in a tube applicator that requires a special gun, two part with a disposable mixing tip. It comes out liquid and then expands to a sponge soft foam. Same as current oem new cars.
