R79 Side Post Battery Supplier
Does anybody manufacturer the R79 side post battery?
If so, has anybody run one on a daily driver? Good or bad stories? As we all have heard about these re-pop batteries exploding, melting, etc. I am sure many of those stories were due to other issues as well, not just the battery manufacturer. Or maybe somebody has another idea on how to duplicate that R79 look? Thanks again for the site. Paul |

Paul,
Do what I did, buy a modern professional Delco battery, take the stickers off the sides and put this Properly Restored Topper on. No one will be able to tell. Full story right here. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...opics/461480/1 |

Re: R79 Side Post Battery Supplier
Both Restoration Battery and Antique Auto Battery sell them. They are fairly accurate except for the decal which DC remade correctly. I have had fairly good luck with them as long as you keep a constant charge on them. If they go down it will depend on how long they have been dormant as to whether you can revive them or not. They are fairly temperamental. I personally would not use one as a daily driver and would use it only for show. I have never heard of the melt down or exploding. I would use one for a time until it pooped out, gut it and use it as a fake for show only.

Technically no one reproduces the R79 or R79W battery today, and they never have.
Delco never gave permission to license them. But they did give permission to license the later issued R89W,which is what they sell you today with an incorrect R79W decal on it. Here's a few photos.Notice the varying case & top differences. The first is todays reproduction R89W they sell with aftermkt. R79W decal with both 3/8" terminals. The second was my OTC NOS R79 (not W) with smooth rubber top & 3/8" + and 5/16" - terminals. The third was my later issued OTC NOS R89W with grained plastic top with both 3/8" terminals. The 4th is Dennis Cumbys original assembly line R79W w/ 3/8" + & 5/16" - terminals that came on his LS-6 Chevelle. |
