comments on the 69 black motion 'wanted' car...
 

I was reading more about the cool triple black 69 camaro used to promote motion, that eventually got stolen early in its life. I dont know if anyone noticed, even in the latest articles published in this months muscle machines (hemmings), it showed the car was originally a stripe delete.

So, if one runs across a true triple black car that was a big block, from baldwin and was an automatic, AND it has a dash dash on the cowl tag for paint/trim (due to the stripe delete, it could be this missing car.

The original stripe color should have been red, and that's what got me looking more at what was up with that car.

If its still out there, atleast there is a unique clue to identifying it (let's say someone swapped out the VIN), but left the cowl tag, it may be worth looking into. Next step would be to look at the hidden VIN.

Back then cars were stolen for two reasons. Parts for your car, ie you knocked the nose off your car, blew your engine, you needed a rear clip. Or #2 joy ride. If it wasn't found right away, it was stripped and the rest scrapped.

my cortez silver 69 zee was stolen in long island with 3000-4000 miles in 1970. Gee I didn't know there were car thefts on long island back then.... Things were much simpler back then but there was still a lot of crime !

Not true.

The very earliest photos of Oldham's car back in the day [HP Cars May 1969 P.21] show it with a white D90. It is the early D90 ending on the fender extension. The car appeared in several Motion ads with the striping. They removed the stripes sometime later. Fisher Body did not apply any part of the D90 striping so it would not be noted on the body tag.

Black was an RPO color very early in the '69 model year; the few early production black cars have a 10 paint code.

Thanks William, I got the order backwards then. Its interesting that they decided to remove the stripes...yet when he had it recreated, he put them back on....

William are you sure about black, code 10, being a RPO? My friend had a Nov 68 built 69 Camaro and it had a -- code and the dealer invoice showed that it was a $32.00 special paint option. Do you know what date the cutoff was? Thank you.

Chevrolets initial RPO paint color chart for the ’69 model year was released July ’68 or so and listed black as available. The ordering info had a notation that SS and RS ordered in black would receive an Argent grille. The listing was later revised and black was dropped. However by that time dealers had cars on order and it looks like Chevy did build at least some of the orders with colors no longer offered. The CRG db has one early 10-10 car [09D] and another 40-40 car. At some point black became special order only and those cars had - paint code. As of January 1969 Black, Butternut Yellow and Champagne became extra-cost RPO colors with paint codes of 10, 40, and 63.

I don’t have the issue but Oldham wrote an editorial back then about dealing with Chevy. He wanted to order the car in black stripe delete and they refused. Normally I'm not a big fan of re-creations but this is a great one. THAT is how '69 Camaros looked back in the day: bars, headers, mags.

People also have their cars purposely stolen when they can no longer afford the payments and the car is worth less than loan value.

Thanks William for clearing up the 1969 black paint availability. I have that article somewhere on Oldham's 69 Camaro where he talks about the problem of ordering a black 69 Camaro. If I remember correctly, he mentioned something about if the car was going to be used for promotional purposes, someone high up in the Chevrolet chain could approve the black paint for his order. I also remember he was disappointed when the car came with the SS fender stripe and I think he may have ordered it with the JL-8 brake pkg and it was delivered w/o the JL-8.
