What were IF code wheels used for?

What were the 14 X 7 steel wheels with the IF code originally used on? I know some guys use them in place of the XT. I thought they were Pontiac but wanted to confirm before I list them here for sale.

Used on 70-72 Olds cutlass and 442 with FE2 or F41 suspension option.

Assembly manual says XT or IF. My 71 442 convert with dog dish had IF, my 70 W30 coupe had XT,71 W30 hardtop had XT.

Like that post says. My 69 Van Nuys built Camaro had the IF code on the build sheet.

They are also 69 Firebird V-8 standard wheels.

I got three of them from a guy that said he removed them from his 69 firebird and they are dated late 68. Glad to see that has been confirmed.

Gregg the IF wheels have a little deeper offset than the XTs also. I never noticed till I had both wheels side by side.

Re: What were IF code wheels used for?

The later IF coded wheels could be different from the earlier, 1969, dated ones, as later XT coded wheels are different from the 1969 version.

I have had a set of 1969 dated IFs and XTs side by side and there was no obvious difference.

I have also had a '69 dated XT beside a later (I cannot remember the exact date) XT and there was a difference in the design of the center, where it is welded to the outside of the rim.

I wish I had taken pics, but it was when I back in the mid '90s when most people did not care.

I'll get them out today and compare them to some 69 dated XT wheels I have.

Thomas, I am glad you said that because I have been saying there is an offset difference forever but I never thought about changes done over time and the date codes. You would have thought they would have used a different wheel codes if they changed the offsets. The first 2 pictures are of the IF wheel I had at the time and second 2 pictures are of the XT wheel I had at the time.
