Keys for '70 Nova

In my first post a while back saying I finally bought a '70 Nova, I mentioned that the ignition switch didn't lock, so you can start the car with or without a key. Several of you gave me some advice, so I called around to some local auto locksmiths and they all basically told me that in order to use my factory GM key, they would have to take apart a replacement ignition to make it fit my key and that it would be expensive. Since I would prefer not spending a ton of money and I don't want to have 3 different keys for my car, I was trolling online the other day and stubled upon this complete Nova lock kit - Ground Up . So my question now is whether any of you have used this setup, and if so, whether it's any good.

Thanks.

To put it bluntly, you get what you pay for. The repro ingition assemblies are made who-knows-where - probably China. I bought a similar set, installed the ignition switch and then noticed it had no accessory position. I had to pull out the new switch and replace it with a used one from another old column I had.

There is always enough time and money to do it right the second time.

In your case, I think you have either of two choices: either have the locksmith put in the new GM lock cylinder with the key it comes with, or pay extra to have them key it to your car.

Actually I prefer having 3 keys (door, trunk, ignition). That way if someone ever pulls out one of your door locks, they can't make a copy of the key and drive your car away. (This was the major method of theft for these cars back in the day - and still is. It can take only a minute or two for an expert criminal to copy that door key).

While the ignition lock may cost to re key, the other locks can be re-keyed to match a new ignition key. But it will require the metal face to be replaced on all of them.

You can still find NOS un-keyed ignition locks occasionally that allow you to key them to your key. Or you can get current ACDelco ignition locks.
