CA Black Plate Issue Info - YOM

As I am in the wait for the CA DMV to okay the use of black plates on my 11/68 built SS via the YOM program (for some reason it had yellow on blue they would not let me use, may have hung around a dealer until '70) I have been looking around at how others have been fairing. I stumbled on this from a plate restorer in TN:

This is the order of issuance of 1963 CA Plates for those looking to be letter correct:

63 - AAA-RDA
64 - RDB-SDP
65 - SDQ-TEC
66 - TED-UGD
67 - UGE-WEC
68 - WED-YCE
69 - YCF-ZZZ

Looks to be correct to me.

Interesting that they went from AAA to R in the first year. Probably because every car in California had to get the new plates. My '55 has its original '63 G-prefix plates and I lucked into a mint take-off pair of U-prefix plates with '67, '68 and '69 stickers for my '67 Camaro on eBay several years ago before the prices went nuts. My Camaro originally had V-prefix plates that were long-gone.

I think there is info out there showing different letters for different areas of the state. My moms 64 Pontiac was ava248.

Definitely many exceptions to that order of issuance, but it looks to be generally correct. I am also assuming the 63 - 69 is in reference to calender years, and not model years. I had one 69 SS that was ordered by the owner of Gledhill Chevrolet for his daughter that was built and delivered in September 69. It had XJZ 951, by the sequence above, 68. And IMO it varied widely by DMV location as some ran out sooner than others, etc. I still cannot explain why my 11/68 car has yellow on blue plates. The DMV said I cannot put them back on, and I cannot also explain why they were taken off. I'm just grateful YOM now goes back to 69.

many 69 Camaros SAT on the lots for quite a while, what was the date that your car was first registered? It was probably sold / registered late enough to get the blue plates originally ...

Exactly what I was thinking. This is a former rough drag car that was treated to a full frame off nut and bolt resto. I had purchased it out of a back yard where it had sat for many years. It must have had a Non-Operation Certificate fee posted on it as the "Transfer" date on the paperwork indicates 2006 and the "first registered" is 0000. It had a good cowl tag, a clean title, and all the hidden VINs were intact which was all I cared about at the time. I will have AAA run the history of the VIN, but as soon as I mention YOM, they will probably refer me to the DMV as they won't touch anything to do with it.

Wasn't there also a GM strike that prolonged '69 Camaro production? Although your car is an 11/68 build it could have been affected by the strike and thus slipped into the new blue-plate period?
