Help to identify a 70 Z28

I have located a local Camaro. The owner claims it is either a Big Block or a Z28 and does not know for sure as the engine/trans are gone. It is Fathom Green, has the weld on rear sway bar brackets, 4 speed hump, 8K tack with Redline starting at 65K, The tag is unaltered but being a Van Nuys car does not seem to help. The gas pedal is cowl mounted instead of floor? It is a deluxe interior and exterior car with the moldings and tall deck wing. The car is 3,000 bucks and is very solid and thought it may be a good first GM for me. I have been trying to brush up on GM muscle here but really only know my Mustangs. I like this car but not interested if it is not a Z28 and can afford a better car just like to work on them and this would be a fun challenge?? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Oh also it has the longer pitman arm and a 12 bolt rear.

Take a look at the lower a-frame bumpers. Z28 will have an aluminum block, about 1" thick, attached to the rubber. Like Dan said, if the pedal isn't floor mounted, it isn't a Z28. For lots of sec gen info, go to www.nastyz28.com.

Sounds like a L78 with deluxe interior, if you don't buy it you should let some of the L78 Camaro guys know where it is so they can have a chance at it.

If this is true, then you need to verify L78 on the trim tag.

What is a California built L78 trim tag going to have Dan? I will go look at the car tomorrow again. Anything else to look for here? Thanks for the help.

Look for a single 3/8" fuel line (no small return line) that would help validate a Z-28 or L-78. Also look very close at the drivers side floor, in the area of a floor mounted pedal, for the two holes that would mount a pedal studs. For some reason I have seen several Z-28's that have had the pedal converted (after they left the factory)to a cowl mounted pedal. Also, count the rear leaf springs, the factory Z-28 spings should have five leaves. The rear end if original will also give you a clue. Look at the front side of the axle tube on the passenger side, a Z-28 should be a COO or COZ code, assuming it is a 12 bolt.

That is all I can think of, good luck.
