A little excitement here the other day!

Last week I was suffering with a pinched sciatic nerve, and therefore not going out much. On Friday afternoon I heard a plane circling my house, and so went out to look. It was the Forestry service spotter, or 'bird dog' plane. The valley was full of smoke from the California fires more than 20 hours drive south of us. I knew there must be a fire just up the hill from me, so grabbed the camera, a couple more painkillers and jumped into the truck.(well, not jumped)
This is what I initially saw.

The spotter plane was flying tight circles like an air racer, and soon 3 air tankers were circling too. If that seems excessive, the wind was gusting to 55 mph, the temp in the mid 90's, conditions were very dry, and there were houses nearby.
Then the biggest tanker started taking practise runs over the target.

Then came his first actual drop. They use fire retardant, colored red so they can see where it landed, and plan the next run accordingly.

Here is a short video. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

He made 4 drops in a few minutes.
The other 2 tankers went off to another fire a few miles away.
Next came the Helicopter with the bucket.

He made 6 trips to the lake in less than 15 minutes, and soaked the area.
Next the forest fire fighters arrived and attacked it with hand tools, and it was all over with by dark.

Wow !! They will have very green growth there next spring depending on what is in the fire retardant. Take care of that sciatic nerve. Ouch https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/ooo.gif

That air tanker is a Convair 440 (former airliner) with turbo-prop engines. When I was a kid in northern California in the '60s and '70s the air tankers were B-17s, TBM Avengers, F7F Tigercats, and later, S2F trackers (piston, now turbo), DC-4s, 6s, and 7s. Air drops are still fun to watch but when they had big recip engines it was really exciting.

There is a DC6 tanker based close by too, and that is interesting to watch as well.
In 1994 we had a pretty serious fire on the east side of Penticton, which resulted in almost 1/3 of the city being evacuated. They brought in the 2 Martin Mars water bombers for that one. These planes skim the water for about 5 miles filling their tanks, and then the thunder of the engines as they struggle to get airborne again. We sat on a friends rear deck overlooking the lake, and watched they go right over us, and I mean RIGHT over us.
It was pretty exciting.
