Loose door mirror fix
 

This is a simple 5 minute fix........I had a problem with my loose rear view door mirrors moving around.........I got mad and decided to try and correct this issue..........as everyone knows the mirror is held in with a snap ring that you can see around the outside edge of the mirror as assembled........I didn't care if I ruined the mirror ........so......Hummm!!!......How do you get this snap ring out.......I got a very small screw driver out and I thought that maybe I could catch it just right and pry it out.........Hummmm!!!!........as I was pushing on it with the screw driver I noticed that the mirror moved in........Pushed it in and the ring came right out along with the glass.........ends up there are three small springs that are located in pockets in the housing...........Keep an eye on the springs as they will just fall out of the pockets when the glass and back-up plate are removed..........Once you get to that point there is a strap that applies pressure to the ball to keep the mirror in place.........Tighten the two phillips head screws and Bingo.......the assy is tight ........reassemble the springs (put some grease on them to keep them in the pockets) .........reinstall in backing plate and mirror..........Push them in and reinstall the snap ring............Problem solved............

Thanks for the post Ken. My passenger side mirror on my '66 flops around some. I think I'm gonna follow your lead and take it apart to see what's up.

Perfect timing on this for me as over the weekend while cleaning up the car I was wondering if that was something that could be fixed or if I needed to start looking for an NOS mirror. Thanks Ken!

Ken is probably working on a 66 Chevy. My 1969, 1970 Camaro's, Chevelle's etc are different and don't have the snap ring.

Yes........The early round type mirrors........Also......Keith took one of his 65 Mirrors apart and it had Rivets holding the pressure strap in place...........Mine were Repro's also........So...It worked in my situation, but I guess not in all....

Wasn't it on this site that someone mentioned putting the mirror in hot water to release the glue?
Apparently that gives you access to the hardware.

You can also rotate the mirror head to it's extreeme position to get access to the "inside" surface of the pivot ball. Use a automatic center punch ( Starrett ) to add a few prick marks to the ball. This will raise the surface of the ball slightly and will be just enough to tighten up the head. I have done several for friends, it seams to last too.

BIG -- I did the exact same thing on my 67' Vette with a "floppy" mirror ... didn't say anything cuz' it looked like there was a fix taking the mirror apart. I couldn't remember if the mirror on the 67' had that ring gizzmo on the glass ... TAZ

I did that to mine and it worked for a while. Once the mirror got moved a few times from cleaning and people bumping into it it got loose again. I tried the center punch again and it didn't last long. I'm going to get a better mirror for it.
