Being a '69 w/ L72 4-Spd, it's hard to think of a better B-Body example of the muscle car era?:hmmm:
Amazing it even exists but even better is how it's such a no nonsense original.:worship:
Big congrats Jeff!
:beers:

L78M22Rag 06-10-2019 05:00 AM

Wow, great score! That car reminds me of my car in high school... ‘cept mine only had a 327, auto, column shift, and was a Garnet Red hardtop. So close!

Thanks for posting Bruce.

What a spectacular example of an incredibly rare high performance car. I think this makes three that we know of. These cars do not get near enough credit and though big still pack plenty of power to compete with many of the cars out there. Congratulations Jeff and thanks for the recent correspondence.

66 L78 ragtop 06-10-2019 01:57 PM

Outstanding! An example of one of the best cars GM had to offer in 1969. Large and in charge!!

69L78 06-10-2019 04:31 PM

Thanks Gentlemen for all the comments, the more I work on this car the more I love it. As you can hear in the video, the left side exhaust manifold is cracked and you can hear the exhaust leak and I have replaced the black shift knob for the correct chrome one.

MosportGreen66 06-10-2019 06:07 PM

Jeff, wonderful example. Thanks for sharing it. Great docs!

I don't think I've ever seen a real one...

Regards,
Dan

love the trailer hitch in the vintage pic ! I don't recall seeing how this car was geared out back ?

450hp 06-11-2019 12:20 AM

Hey Jeff, what a great ride that is. Looks, power, and a conv. Sounds awesome, does it have chamber exhausts? Was not expecting that, wow, made my heart rate go up. Thanks Steve.:3gears:

camarojoe 06-11-2019 01:54 AM

Nice car... 2 questions: is that black painted steering wheel shroud center and black horn buttons original? Would have thought an Impala SS would have a woodgrain shroud. Does the shifter handle not have "Muncie" stamped on the side?

Oh and #3. Is that exhaust original? i was told the tailpipes originally exited right behind the rear wheels on an L72 car, rather than extending to the bumper.

It was ordered with 3.31 gears and in 1987 the 4th owner installed 4.10 gears, I have the original 3.31's & plan on keeping the 4.10's in it.
The trailer hitch was taken off in 1987 by the 4th owner from NJ, I would like to find another one to put back on, attached is a pic of what I need, the one bracket is still on the car.

Joe, I had the same questions for Les who bought the car from the cousin in 1985, I also thought it should have the rosewood being it is on the dash and it has the pedal trim. Look at the vintage photo from March 1987, you can clearly see it has the black center & the silver highlighted. The patina & paint on the shroud matches the paint on the wheel perfectly. I do know the 4th owner removed the chrome know & replaced it with the black knob. There is no Muncie on the handle as well as you can see in the pic. In 1987, I have receipts showing the purchase of a new Hurst Competition Plus shifter, the original shifter was removed & I still have it in my possession, they installed the new hurst linkage and cut the muncie handle off and put it on the Hurst linkage.
As for the exhaust, look at the vintage pics from 1987, it clearly shows the rear exit. You will be at Carlisle, come look for yourself.
Also attached are pics from the Sports Dept Brochure

Thought that was the solids!

69L78 06-11-2019 07:27 PM

Well it is the solids, but it has a cracked manifold that is leaking and goes away once warmed up, I have it off now getting welded.

Mr. Chevy 06-12-2019 02:59 AM

Love the sound of the solids.....

Rich

Very nice wholesale invoice. How did the original owner secure that rare piece of paperwork?

When the original owner sold it to his cousin in 1983, there was no paperwork. It was not until 1985 when Les the 3rd & 5th owner called Wantz Chevy & talked with the owner & asked if they remembered the car & they did and told him they thought they had the dealer file & Les asked if he could get a copy & the owner told him to come over & he would give him the file. Also in 1985 when Les bought the car, he was going thru the trunk & removed the spare tire & pulled up the original trunk mat & found the POP.

Yep. Numbers matching 390HP

Does your block have "CONV" on the back of it?

revsitup 06-13-2019 08:59 PM

Looks really nice in the pics Jeff! Awesome car with great paperwork also. Cant wait to see it in person.
BTw the car trailer in the pics looks familiar? lol
Brent

flyingn 06-13-2019 11:35 PM

very nice! Cant wait to see it in the solidlifter showroom

Jonesy 06-14-2019 03:04 PM

CONV is on all blocks, I believe it is followed by a number designating the conveyor it traveled on after it was cast.

galveston 06-14-2019 07:34 PM

Great car, Interesting that it has a small block fan shrould , maybe it was damaged by a failed motor mount and that's all they could find.
Are the original motor mounts still in it?

Should be a 3939391.
